Absolutely breathtaking. As someone who struggles with mental health and gender issues, I truly felt as if I was seeing myself represented within the pages of this novel. The author handles each issue with such poise and grace that, through Brio’s plight, I truly feel like I understand myself better after reading it. Brio’s journey is heart-wrenching and visceral; but ultimately one of enlightenment and understanding. It is truly dicult to explain how much this novel meant to me outside of simply: Transcendental.
Too often, characters like Brio are not the central figure in literature and we are forced to experience them through the eyes of someone who doesn’t understand. It’s something that is often villainized and treated as ‘other’. To be able to see myself fully represented in a protagonist; in a way that is so careful and understanding meant so much to me.
