This novel is unlike anything I have ever read. The research that must have gone into it to ensure we get an accurate understanding of Brio’s perspective, is impressive. Throughout you can never really tell what is actually happening and what is Brio’s interpretation of what is happening. It’s unsettling and exhausting, conveying what it must feel like to be Brio. The constant internal conflict and reasoning expertly portrays the psychology involved.
The themes. There are so many relevant and topical ones in here, it’s incredibly clever, three dimensional and really makes you think once you’ve put the book down! I love the theme of how global tech companies are starting to control everything in today’s society and the warning that comes with it. Coupling that with using AI and hypnosis ideas to effectively create the scariest cult in the world, really stays with you!
Alongside that, the fact it is from Brio’s perspective and it so wonderfully reflects his condition; it really puts you in his shoes, helps you empathise with him and makes you question your own approach and attitudes to mental health. It is expertly done!
